The Hamilton Watch Co was incorporated in 1892 from the remnants of several companies, named for the Scottish attorney who founded the Pennsylvania town of Lancaster, where the original factory was located. Widely recognized as the benchmark for accuracy standards, Hamilton claimed over 50% of the market during the railroad era, producing some 4 million pocket watches. Want to own a legendary timepiece?

Hamilton's legendary 992B was introduced in the autumn of 1940 in what would become four variants with different markings, based on the earlier and very popular 992, which debuted just after the turn of the century. A little over a half-million of the 992B were turned out before all production ceased in 1969, with the company moving to Switzerland. This superb example was just cleaned, oiled and timed, and is exceptional in every way. All twenty-one jewels appear intact and original, and everything under the dial is present and correct. The double-sunk porcelain dial itself is flawless, an upgrade over the usual melamine dial, which deteriorate over time, behind a full set of correct black hands. The gold-filled Star case has very little mileage on it, showing just light and even pocket wear. The covers thread on and off easily, the bow is tight, the crown is sharp, and the crystal is glass. Matching lanyard and display stand included.

After the leadership change and subsequent renaming of the Springfield Watch Co, the decision was made to manufacture only higher-grade watches, meaning anything under 15-jewel was out, leaving the factory to concentrate on fully-jeweled watches and eventually becoming the only American watch company to offer 26-jewel watches as regular production grades. This fantastic 16-size original-combination Bunn Special was just thoroughly restored for its next steward, resetting the roller jewel and polishing the balance pivots. All of its jeweling is still present and intact, an increasingly rare thing; even the factory dust band is still there after a century of service. The correct arrows-in dial is snow-white with only a single light hairline at the 9-minute-mark behind a full set of plum spade-and-poker hands. It's housed in an unusual two-tone 25-year Philadelphia case with a yellow-gold frame and white-gold covers that shows a lifetime of service marks on the inside of the caseback, all appearing to be from the same careful watchmaker. It has a new beveled glass crystal and a blank shield. Matching lanyard and display stand included.

Hamilton's 16-size 21-jewel 992 debuted in 1903 with a pattern identical to the older and larger 18-size 940, which eventually became known as the First Model, even though there were two mechanical variants within the run that should have qualified as model changes but didn't. The Second Model appeared a decade later with the very same design but with pinstripes, which was entirely cosmetic, so it shouldn't have qualified as a separate model but did. The two variants within the first model were the number of dial feet, which went down from four to three, and the change from the two-screw crown boss to a single larger LHT one. This beautiful and original example is the earliest of all the variants and was just restored for the next owner with all twenty-one jewels still intact and all hardware present and correct, still in its original 25-year gold-filled Crescent clamshell case. The dial is the correct double-sunk light Arabic and is flawless behind blued moon hands and a new beveled glass crystal. Matching lanyard and display stand included.

South Bend made fewer than a million watches during their 25-year run and are mostly overlooked by collectors, which means the remaining survivors don't get passed around like a taco platter at a dorm party. Don't miss out on this Adjusted-5-Positions 21-jewel railroad-grade pocket watch from the Roaring Twenties with very little mileage on it.
The Studebaker Brothers, already famous as automakers, bought the failing Columbus Watch Co in 1903 and moved the whole thing to Indiana, renaming it the South Bend Watch Co. The new company was famous for freezing their watches in ice to demonstrate their accuracy and driving them up and down Main Street in a wagon behind a donkey, which was an interesting marketing strategy. One of their highest 16-size grades after the Polaris was the 227, which came with twenty-one jewels and was adjusted to temperature and five positions. This exceptionally nice example was just restored with a new mainspring and a thorough cleaning, still carrying its original dust band and correct snow-white double-sunk dial with the Gothic signature behind blued hands. The 20-year Bates & Bacon gold-filled case is also in exceptional condition with a beautiful pattern on the rear cover, a blank shield, a sharp crown, and a new glass crystal. Matching lanyard and display stand included.

Only three American companies made wind-indicators in quantity, and they represented the top echelon of railroad-approved models because they displayed the power reserve of the mainspring in hours since it was last wound. In other words, wind-indicators have a gas gauge to show just how much is left in the tank.
American Waltham kept their model assignments simple, naming them after the year in which they debuted, meaning that their Model 08 was created in 1908. It was a superb 16-size design and the eventual platform for several grades, one of which was the Crescent Street, named after the actual location of the factory, the largest building in America for a time. The wind-indicator feature was technically an add-on, since nothing in the base model needed to be altered to install the planetary stack and idlers necessary to push the indicator hand. In fact, there is nothing on the movement showing that it is a wind-indicator. This exceptional example was well cared for, still retaining all twenty-one of its original jewels, original balance staff, hardware under the dial and dust band even now, a hundred and ten years later. It's been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and timed, ready to keep excellent time for the foreseeable future. The Arabic dial has a light hairline at the 3-minute-position behind all four correct and blued hands, and the Bates and Bacon 20-year gold-filled case has light wear with a French bow, a tight crown, and a new glass crystal. Matching lanyard and display stand included.

Hunters were a gentleman's watch, meant for men of leisure, a fine cigar, and sitting on the veranda with a mint julep. They are also a little magical, with the cover springing open to reveal the time at the push of a button. Treat this one with respect, swinging at the end of a gold chain while you draw down on a hand of low hole-card wild.
Hamilton's 941 debuted in 1898 as the hunting version of their open-face workhorse, the railroad-approved 940, though the company made far fewer of them over their twenty-five-year run, producing some 26,000 of the 941 compared to roughly 210,000 of the 940. The 18-size 21-jewel 941 came in three variants: grade unmarked, marked 941, and the motor barrel-equipped, which was the least common. The latter had an additional plate to carry the mainspring arbor, which was not mounted directly to the barrel, allowing for a smoother letdown of the mainspring. This exceptional example was just restored with a thorough cleaning and a new alloy mainspring, and all of its twenty-one original jewels in gold settings are still intact over a century later, which is fairly rare. It fronts a correct and flawless snow-white Arabic double-sunk dial behind nicely blued factory spade hands. The warm brass hunter case is in excellent shape with a blank shield, a blank cuvette, a tight bow, and a sharp crown for easy winding. The crystal is glass and the front cover overextends slightly. Matching lanyard and display stand included.
